Atlas Model Railroad Co., Inc. has made a name for itself in model railroad accessory and tracking making because of their ingenuity, innovation, and invention. Well-known for their excellence and quality, Atlas is proud of their family-owned business reputation.

Stephan Schaffan Sr. founded the Atlas Tool Company in 1924. First it was a general machining shop, started inside a small Newark, New Jersey garage located at 330 Waverly Avenue. Stephan Schaffan Sr. brought with him from Czechoslovakia his toolmaking skills and machine, when around the turn of the century he became an American immigrant. Stephan Schaffan Jr. attended the Vocational School in Essex County, where he graduated in 1933 after joining the business with his father at age 16. This began the father and son business of the Atlas Tool Company.

Steve Jr. invented pre-assembled turnouts, flexible track, and practical rail joiner (the first of its kind), as well as engineered the process of stapling rail to the fiber track. The mass-market hobby of model railroading became popular due to the engineering and creation of these products, along with many others. The small basement and garage operation quickly became too small for this eager entrepreneur. Once Steve and his dad realized they could turn their business into a career, they went to Hillside, New Jersy where they built their first factory in 1947. The address was 413 Florence Avenue. The Atlas Tool Company, Inc. was born September 30th, 1949, as it became an official New Jersey incorporated company.

As an innovator in this hobby, Steve achieved the status of worldwide leader. The world would know his Custom-Line® Turnouts, Super-Flex® Track, and Snap-Switches®, plus many more of his masterpieces. Even today, it is because of him that model railroading hobbyists enjoy durability and reliability from Atlas track, due to the effort Steve put into his work in Europe, Asia and the United States.

Since the beginning, the Atlas product line has increased to include other items besides track. Atlas model railroading products can be found in almost all areas of N and HO scale models. Atlas N scale products each have quality painting, printing, and detailed fine printing, as they have spent more than 25 years to develop their collection; it contains over 550 paint schemes and more than 40 types of freight cars. Containing over 265 paint schemes and more than 25 various freight car types, the HO ready-to-run line by Atlas is very extensive as well. There will continue to be an expansion in the lines of N scale and HO scale freight cars in Atlas' future.
