A visitor asked:
A good friend told me recently that model railroading was an activity he shared with his father. They had a huge model train layout in the basement before is dad's passing. Because of the fond memories that this hobby gives him of his dad (it's one of the few vivid memories of time they spent together), he wants to continue pursuing model trains as he gets older. I am contemplating getting a gift for this person and I was thinking that a ready to run starter set or book for beginners might be a good thing for his birthday or Christmas gift. Any suggestions from model railroad experts out there? What would be the best gift for this situation?

Great Idea… the books I’d suggest come from Kalambach Publishing (they print Model Railroading Magazine):
They have a nice SERIES of book that cover the basics, and also that deal with “realistic” operations and design of the layout. Here is a link to get you started:
ONE I truly suggest is “Realistic Operations”:
Yes, there are a lot of us into model railroading and Kalbach is the best place to start. go to and just check out everything. Welcome you friend back into the hobby the best way you can. By the way, you might like to come back to “Training”.
