Lionel Figures
The human element of any layout comes from it's human figures. When the scale is correct, it becomes easy to imagine the view of your model trains from the eyes of these plastic model citizens. Lionel and other companies produced a wide variety of figures with varying activities and poses. Taken as a whole with the often associated accessories, it's almost like a snapshot of everyday life. Isn't this what we strive to create with our train layouts and town scenes?
Starting from the postwar period, Lionel began including 2 or 3 figures with many of their accessories. Soon figures began to get integrated into the actions and activities of many of the then newer accessories and add ons. A classic example of this would be the automatic gateman or the moving figures at the animated newsstand.
Lionel Box Cars themselves also began to include lionel figures as apart of their automatic actions or sometimes they were just along for the ride.
