Lionel O Gauge Train Sets
Lionel introduced the first O gauge train sets in 1915. Initially there was some overlap in production as Lionel produced both Standard gauge and the then new O gauge. The O gauge standard calls for 1 1/4" between running rails of O gauge tracks. Initially the scale for O gauge trains was approximately 1: 48. This scale however was not exact and the trains were just slightly smaller in proportion than 1: 48. Later in 1937 as the trend to realism became stronger, Lionel created a serious exact 1:48 scale model of the New York Central Hudson train. It was at this point that Lionel created both highly detailed "exact-scale" and less detailed "semi-scale" lines at varying price points.

O gauge is a standard that remains with us to this day, and that's a good thing. It's not uncommon to see a train from 80 years ago running as good as ever on a modern layout.
