Lionel Santa Fe Engines
The Santa Fe F3 diesel engine is legendary. It's a beautiful site in it's 3 unit configuration. Collectors know the Santa Fe F3 model numbers by heart. Despite not being the rarest model trains around, these are some of the most collectable trains from Lionel and have only increased in their value.
The 2333 is the original iteration of this model. Like many Lionel models it has variants with small modifications such as the GM decal placement and the inclusion or exclusion of minor details and refinements. The 2333 variations include type I, type II, type III and type IV.
With the addition of magnetraction in 1950, the Santa Fe F3 engine model number was promoted to 2343.

In 1953 the Santa Fe F3 was promoted to model number 2353. A few details were changed and the operating horn was moved to the B unit.
As a bookend to the postwar era, the 2383 Santa Fe model was in production the longest from 1958 through 1966. Many of the details from prior models were simplified or removed in this iteration. The truck side frames are black on 2383's and some units (type II) have war bonnet that appears to have a slight orange tint rather than the bright red normally seen.
Santa Fe engines can also be found in the ALCO variety. Most of these were produced between 1964 and 1966. The ALCO Santa Fe locomotives have 3 digit model numbers. Some of the models are: 212 , 215, 218, 220 and 223.
