Lionel Standard Gauge Sets
Showing bold initiative in 1906, Lionel took leadership by introducing "Lionel Standard Gauge" track with three rails. Standard Gauge track has 2 1/4" between the running rails. Prior to Lionel's move, there was no standard for toy trains and thus very little cross compatibility. Lionel's founder, Joshua Lionel Cowen contended that it would be beneficial to all model train companies if they adopted cross compatibility and standards with all their products.
The first Standard gauge sets began to make their appearance in the Lionel train product line around 1910. Packaging these Standard gauge trains into sets including a locomotive, a few cars and enough track for a basic layout, the "train set" was born. Although, Lionel called them "Outfits".

As a testament to their durability, there are collectable Standard gauge sets that are still run to this day. Vintage Lionel trains really harken back to a time when American manufacturing was synonymous with quality. In other words, in that period, things were made to last.
