Lionel Cabooses
Like the steam locomotive, the caboose has a nostalgic and sentimental role in the hearts and minds of many model railroaders. The caboose is a symbol of the rich past of railroading. Most of us who are old enough, can't imagine a long train of freight cars without it's fitting end, a brown or red caboose.
Lionel cabooses ran the gamut from highly detailed and realistic with working smoke jacks and interior lighting to toy like molded plastic with very little attention to real life exact details. Some of the "star" Lionel cabooses for collectors by model number include:

During the golden years of Lionel, the caboose was not a relic of the past. Lionel produced a multitude of cabooses with varying body styles and colors.
Cabooses have become almost a niche within themselves relative to model railroading as a whole. There are quite a few model railroaders who specialize in collecting cabooses primarily.
