Lionel Locomotives
Throughout the history of Lionel trains, the Lionel Locomotive has been a bellwether to the state of Lionel technology and the company in general. The innovation of Lionel locomotives paralleled what was going on with real railroad locomotives. We can see this with the introduction of the Streamliner locomotives such as the Hiawatha, The Union Pacific M-1000 or The Flying Yankee. In 1937 Lionel made a breakthrough in unprecedented detail and exact 1: 48 scale with it's New York Central Hudson 4-6-4 steam locomotive. This was a defining step in the evolution of the Lionel locomotive, pushing the product envelope and perception from that of a toy with a few details to a serious life like scale hobby for adults.
New high pressure die techniques allowed for the increased details. After WW2 the attention to detail really began to shine as Lionel entered its Golden Era.
