Lionel Tanker Cars
Since the end of World War 2 in the golden Postwar era, Lionel has almost always included a tanker car in it's outfits or train sets. There are 5 different forms that these tanker cars appeared as. In order of production they are as follows:
• prewar deluxe steel car
• tanker car with two domes
• short single dome tankers
• triple dome tanker car
• single dome chemical tanker car
Lionel also produced vat cars which can accurately be described as cars with vertical liquid containers or vats, (usually 4).
In real life, multi domed tanker cars allowed multiple liquids and chemicals to be transported simultaneously in the same car which was divided internally into multiple compartments, one for each dome. As far as details, the Sunoco logo can be seen on many postwar lionel tanker cars, just as this brand was prevalent on real life cars and oil vehicles.
Some of the rare collector super star Lionel tanker standouts include the 2465 Type I or 2465 Type II. Both produced in 1946 they are very hard to come by now. In "like new condition" these cars could be worth up to $300.
Also of great value (around $220 for "like new" condition) are the 2755 cars, Type I, II and Type III. The 2755 was the first postwar tanker car. Produced in 1945 Only, it was really well detailed with all the realistic trim and features.
Lastly, another collector gem that we'll mention would be the very rare 2855, (I, II and to a lesser degree II). This car is a single dome tanker that can be found in the rare colors of black or airplane grey. In "like new condition" these cars could be worth between $275 to $425.
