MTH Trains

MTH Electric Trains is a perfect example of a company built mostly from a love of model trains. Originally called Mike’s Train house, MTH, based in Columbia, Maryland was founded by Mike Wolf. Mike was a train prodigy who began his career enthusiastically and early at the age of 12 working for Williams Electric Trains. What began as a mail order business run out of his parent’s home, evolved into the modern day model railroad empire of today that is MTH.?Founded in the 1980s, as one of the newer companies in the world of model trains, MTH has given O gauge the jolt that it needed with new innovation, extensive details and high quality. In 1994 MTH began producing their complete line of O gauge trains and have since expanded to their current offerings in HO scale, G scale and the vintage Standard Gauge. MTH has really upped the ante, satisfying the needs of model railroaders for more realism, detail and authenticity.
MTH consist primarily of 2 product lines.

The RailKing Line

Railking Trains first made their appearance in 1995 and now consist of over 5000 different items. The MTH RailKing Line trains have moderate detail and are not quite exact scale, as they are designed to run on regular O gauge tracks that typically have some tighter radius turns. To negotiate the tighter turns of traditional O gauge layouts and sets, model train manufacturers had to make a compromise on perfect realism by making their trains slightly shorter than perfect scale proportions would dictate. Because they are shorter in length, RailKing Trains can negotiate circles as small as 31 inches in diameter.

Within the Railking Line, there are also two different series that offer a little more detail without the high end cost of MTH Premier trains. These include the Imperial Series and RailKing Scale.

Imperial Series

RailKing Imperial locomotives retain traditional proportions and O-31 minimum curve operation like regular RailKing locomotives, but are equipped with a level of detail usually found only on more expensive, full-scale engines that require much larger curves.

RailKing Scale

RailKing Scale diesel lcomotives are full scale -proportioned models featuring a higher level of detail than that found on regular RailKing models. Because of their scale proportions, RailKing Scale models require a minimum of O-31 curves in order to operate.

The Premier Line

The MTH Premiere is MTH’s high end top of the line series. MTH Premier Line trains are exact scale proportioned replicas of their real train counterparts, with the most minute details replicated to maximum realism. The attention to the highest quality also extends to the construction and inner workings of the engine. Premier engines are powerful and with their flywheel-equipped motors can pull trains with more than fifty cars.
