Lionel 2245 Texas Special
Lionel’s model of the F3 Texas Special was first produced in 1954. This locomotive was sold as an A-B set unlike previous F3 diesels that were often sold as A-A sets. The B units were made with composite sheet metal over a plastic frame.
As one of the first lionel F3 diesel ventures into the 027 scale market, The 2245 Texas Special is still a handsome locomotive with it’s glossy red paint and silk screened white lower side panel.

Like many diesel locomotives, the Texas special Can be found in 3 differing variations.
The 1954 Type I models included a horizontal motor and trucks with silver side frames. Also present were decorative steps.
In early 1955, the new Type II A unit was built with a new frame and chassis. Other changes include blackened truck side frames, a vertically mounted motor and a silver metallic painted pilot casting instead of the red from before.
In late 1955, Lionel was producing the Type III Texas Special 2245. The only major change was the portholes of the B unit were now closed molded red plastic instead of the clear lenses of before.
Ironically, though features seemed to be gradually removed in each subsequent variation, the later variations are more difficult to find on the collector’s market and thus they are more valuable. A Type I in like new condition is listed as being worth around $950, a Type II like new is listed at $1000 while a Type III like new is said to be worth about $1650 according to The Standard Catalog of Lionel Trains by David Doyle.
