Meet Me At The Corner

The hobby of model railroading needs new young participants to grow and thrive and a trip to the San Diego Model Railroad Museum can really help inspire young minds to see how fun this hobby is. While a trip to San Diego may not be possible right now for our younger visitors, MeetMeAtTheCorner.org provides the next best thing with a very interesting virtual tour of the Model Railroad Museum.

About MeetMeAtTheCorner.org

First a little about the site, Meet Me At The Corner. The site was founded by award winning author and educator, Donna Guthrie. We’re really impressed by the interactive format and original concept of this site which was created to foster curiosity, self expression and communication in young people via the multimedia technology that is so prevalent in this internet age. Equally impressive is the fact that the “virtual field trip” episodes are filed and submitted by kids from all over.

San Diego Model Railroad Museum Virtual Field Trip

The latest Meet Me At The Corner virtual field trip focuses on model trains at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. This engaging presentation touches on everything from the history of model trains (including the origins of toy trains which coincided with the earliest real trains), electric model trains and the popularity that Lionel brought to them, all the way up to the nearly true to life scale model trains of today. The narrator, Holly has a brief interview with Charles Young, the head docent of the Model Railroad Museum. Mr. Young talks about all the things one can learn about by working with model trains as it touches on several fields of knowledge. The presentation then gives a brief summary of what you need to get started in this fun hobby. Of course there is some great video footage of the various trains and layouts at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum.

With it’s fresh MeetMeAtTheCorner.org format, the San Diego Model Railroad Museum virtual field trip episode also includes a listing of fun model train related websites as well as related questions and learning activities that can be incorporated into a curriculum or lesson plan.

A Virtual Window To The World

Meet Me At The Corner offers a great window to the world for kids by other kids and we just had to check out some of the other great episodes that really cover a wide variety of subjects and attractions. There is something for everyone here and it’s all done in an educationally enriching and fun format that really does spark one’s curiosity about the world around us.
